Course Objectives
In this training you will learn about the digestion process, including the elimination of waste from the body. You will also learn about the following:
The anatomy and physiology of the digestive system.
Age-related changes that occur in the digestive process.
How to assist a loved one or client with taking medication through a feeding tube.
Why cathartics or stool softeners are prescribed.
The proper procedure for assisting a loved one or client with a suppository.
How to assist a loved one or client with the administration of an enema.
Accepted practices for cleaning and changing a colostomy bag.
Course Description
Have you ever accompanied a loved one or a client to the hospital or a doctor’s appointment? If the answer is yes, you might recall being asked detailed questions about the regularity, size, shape, and color of your loved one’s or client’s bowel movements. In some instances (i.e., following a surgery), your loved one or client may not have been deemed eligible for discharge from the hospital until he or she had what is termed a “productive bowel movement.” You may wonder why healthcare professionals place an emphasis on stool. Elimination of urine and stool is a natural and necessary process, whereby wastes are removed from the body. Any disruption in this process can result in pain, infection, and on rare occasions, death.

Our courses are designed to help you meet your continuing education requirements as listed in 42 CFR 484.36 which means they are appropriate for family members, unlicensed caregivers, and direct care workers employed by Home Care and Assisted Living providers.
