Course Description

Have you ever accompanied a loved one or a client to the hospital or a doctor’s appointment? If the answer is yes, you might recall being asked detailed questions about the regularity, size, shape, and color of your loved one’s or client’s bowel movements. In some instances (i.e., following a surgery), your loved one or client may not have been deemed eligible for discharge from the hospital until he or she had what is termed a “productive bowel movement.” You may wonder why healthcare professionals place an emphasis on stool. Elimination of urine and stool is a natural and necessary process, whereby wastes are removed from the body. Any disruption in this process can result in pain, infection, and on rare occasions, death.
